Jacob Tierney sets Alexander the Great drama at Netflix

Jacob Tierney, known for creating the series Heated Rivalry, will write, direct, and executive-produce a new period drama titled Alexander for Netflix. The series focuses on Alexander the Great and his tutor Aristotle, based on Annabel Lyon's novel The Golden Mean. Netflix announced the project on Thursday.

Jacob Tierney, the creator and showrunner of the series Heated Rivalry, is developing a new Netflix drama called Alexander. In this project, Tierney will handle writing, directing, and executive-producing duties. The series draws from Annabel Lyon's novel The Golden Mean and explores the relationship between the young prince Alexander and his tutor Aristotle amid the crumbling Athenian empire.

According to the official description, the story begins with Aristotle arriving in Macedonia to tutor the volatile Alexander. It unfolds against a backdrop of palace intrigue, forbidden love, brutal war, and ruthless ambitions. Their unlikely friendship ultimately shapes an empire and influences history.

Executive producers on the series include Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan from Aggregate Films, along with Brendan Brady, who worked on Heated Rivalry. Tierney expressed enthusiasm for the adaptation in a statement: "I fell in love with Annabel Lyon's book 'The Golden Mean' years ago and have been dreaming of telling this story ever since. Brendan and I couldn't be more excited to be partnering with Aggregate [Films] and Netflix to bring this insanely compelling world to life."

Jinny Howe, Netflix's head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, praised the vision: "Jacob Tierney is one of the most exciting, in-demand creative voices working today, and we are thrilled to work with him on 'Alexander.' We were immediately captivated by his vision for adapting Annabel Lyon's acclaimed novel. This series reimagines the classic power struggle between mentor and protégé with a raw, modern energy that feels both epic and incredibly intimate. This high-stakes drama is poised to deeply resonate with our global audience, and we look forward to bringing it to life with the deftly talented Jason Bateman and the Aggregate Films team."

No release date for Alexander has been announced.
