Jockey elvin abrea dies in tragic fall at philippine racecourse

Elvin Abrea, a 32-year-old jockey, has died after being unseated from his horse and trampled during a race in the Philippines. The incident occurred at the Hapi Jockey Club in Padre Garcia, the country's only racecourse, which opened in November. Sunday's races were cancelled in the wake of the tragedy.

The fatal accident took place on Saturday during the sixth race of the meeting at the Hapi Jockey Club in Padre Garcia. Abrea was riding Fly With The Wind in a seven-horse field when the horse clipped the heels of the runner ahead, Magnolia Ariana, ridden by JL Paano. As Fly With The Wind stumbled, Abrea was thrown heavily onto the track, where a trailing horse galloped over him.

The stewards' report detailed: "Approaching the 1000 metre marker. EA Abrea (Fly With The Wind) was unseated. Stewards observed that Fly With The Wind clipped the heels of the horse (Magnolia Ariana) in front of him. JL Paano when asked explained that he did not feel anything and his mount was running a straight path."

Abrea, who had recorded one victory since the track's opening, succumbed to his injuries. The Philippine Jockey Club issued a statement expressing profound sorrow: "The Philippine Jockey Club mourns the passing of jockey Abrea, who sadly passed away following a riding incident. We extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones, fellow jockeys, trainers and the entire racing community."

The statement continued: "Jockey Abrea's dedication, bravery, and passion for horse racing will be remembered with respect and gratitude. During this time of profound loss, the Philippine Jockey Club stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the racing community as we honour his life and service to the sport. Rest in peace, jockey Elvin Abrea."

Racing commissioners called off Sunday's meeting, citing a 'deeply sombre' atmosphere in the community following the incident.
