K.T. Rama Rao says linking delimitation to women’s quota is unwise

Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K.T. Rama Rao described student protests over the NEET paper leak as a unique inflection point in Indian politics during his visit to Delhi.

K.T. Rama Rao said the protests reflected multiple frustrations among people rather than a single issue. He noted that the Bharatiya Janata Party still has time to address youth concerns while the opposition failed to provide leadership, leaving the moment to students in a leaderless manner similar to the Arab Spring.

On delimitation, Rao stated it was unwise to intertwine the Women’s Reservation Act with the process as done in the special session. He said women’s reservation can be implemented separately and warned that altering the southern states’ 24 per cent share in Parliament could trigger serious protests in the south.

Rao proposed two solutions. The first is to increase the number of MLA seats nationwide from over 4,000 to 6,000 without affecting parliamentary representation. The second is to reach a consensus that preserves the current 24 per cent share for southern states to maintain balance.
