Local solidarity towards Lens fans after Sochaux-Lens match postponement

Following the late postponement of the Coupe de France 16th round match between Sochaux and RC Lens due to weather conditions, many Montbéliard residents offered housing and refreshments to stranded Lens supporters. Despite a prefectural ban, fans had braved the weather to travel. This warm initiative highlights a beautiful wave of solidarity in football.

The Coupe de France 16th round match between Sochaux, a National league club, and RC Lens was originally scheduled for Saturday at 9 PM in Montbéliard. However, due to adverse weather conditions, it was postponed in the afternoon to Sunday at 2 PM. This decision came too late for many Lens supporters, who were already en route or on site.

Earlier in the week, the prefect had banned Racing fans from entering Montbéliard's city center. Despite this, some defied the order and found themselves stranded by snow and cold. In response, local residents quickly offered help.

On the Facebook page 'Soyons Sport', Frédéric Chevassus posted a call to centralize housing offers: 'Let's not leave the Lens fans in difficulty tonight!'. He explains: 'I saw people starting to offer accommodations, so I thought I'd try to centralize it all. We can't let Lens supporters sleep outside or in their cars, especially with snow outside. It creates bonds, it's nice.'

Other initiatives emerged. The owner of the Le 1801 brasserie in central Montbéliard offered a drink to Lens supporters who came to eat there. Additionally, the Ange bakeries in Montbéliard, Sochaux, and Audincourt provided free coffee and croissants upon showing an RC Lens subscriber card.

In a context where football is often criticized for its violence, these gestures remind us of the sport's positive values, fostering connections between rival communities.
