Manchester City defeats Dortmund 4-1 in Champions League

Borussia Dortmund suffered its first Champions League defeat of the season against Manchester City. The team lost 1:4 and dropped to 14th in the table. Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, celebrated its first win of the season with a 1:0 victory at Benfica Lisbon.

At the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, Borussia Dortmund lost 4:1 (2:0) to Manchester City on matchday four of the Champions League. The previously strong defensive Dortmund side was overwhelmed by the hosts' attack. Phil Foden scored the 1:0 with a long-range shot in the 22nd minute and made it 3:0 in the 57th. Erling Haaland, a former BVB player, netted the 2:0 in the 29th minute, reaching his 18th goal of the season in his 14th game. Waldemar Anton pulled one back to 3:1 via a free kick from Julian Ryerson in the 72nd minute, but Rayan Cherki set the 4:1 final score in the 90.+1 minute. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel commented: "Phasenweise war es einfach nicht gut genug." Coach Niko Kovač made four substitutions in the 67th minute, including Emre Can's season debut. Dortmund held 85 percent possession early but couldn't recover. Manchester City rose to 4th place.

In Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen secured its first Champions League win of the season with a 1:0 (0:0) victory over Benfica. Patrik Schick headed in the winner in the 65th minute shortly after coming on, off a rebound from Samuel Dahl. Benfica had chances via Dodi Lukébakio (11th and 44th minutes) and Nicolás Otamendi (33rd and 43rd minutes) but failed to convert. Leverkusen faced defensive pressure, retreated after the goal, and held the narrow win. The team moves to 21st place.
