María Corina Machado, winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for democracy and peaceful transition in Venezuela, arrived in Oslo, but her attendance at the December 10 ceremony at 1:00 p.m. in the City Hall remains in doubt. The Nobel Institute canceled a planned press conference with her, and her exact whereabouts are unknown, possibly in diplomatic shelters to avoid threats from Nicolás Maduro's regime. Machado lived in clandestinity since late August 2024, after denouncing fraud in the July 28 presidential elections, where her ally Edmundo González claims evidence of victory with over 80% of the electoral acts.
Her family, including mother, sisters, and children, remains at the Grand Hotel in Oslo, awaiting her arrival. Clara Machado Parísca, her sister, told Blu Radio: “She is trying to arrive in the city to receive the prize. Her desire is to be here and collect the prize.” The Nobel Committee highlighted her leadership in Vente Venezuela and her activism for human rights amid repression.
In response, Chavismo organized a march in Caracas led by PSUV's Diosdado Cabello, coinciding with the ceremony, to downplay the Nobel, which Cabello called an “international auction.” He stated that “the only transition is to socialism.”
Argentina's President Javier Milei arrived in Oslo on Tuesday wearing a YPF overall, invited by Machado. He will attend the ceremony alongside Ecuador's Daniel Noboa, Paraguay's Santiago Peña, and Panama's José Raúl Mulino, in a show of regional unity. Milei will hold audiences with King Harald V and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre before returning on Thursday. This support aims to increase international pressure on the Venezuelan regime.
