Matt Dillon cast as lead in MGM+ The Magnificent Seven series

Actor Matt Dillon has been cast as the lead in an upcoming eight-episode drama series on MGM+, reimagining the classic 1960 Western film The Magnificent Seven. The series, created by Tim Kring, follows a group of gunfighters protecting a Quaker village. Filming is scheduled to begin in Calgary in June.

Matt Dillon, known for roles in films such as There's Something About Mary and Asteroid City, will portray Chris Adams, the leader of seven gunfighters in the new MGM+ series The Magnificent Seven. This eight-episode drama reimagines the 1960 Western classic, originally an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. The story centers on the gunfighters agreeing to defend a Quaker village from a villainous land baron seeking to seize the land. The series will explore the backstories of the characters and themes of violence versus non-violence, given the Quakers' pacifist beliefs.

Written and executive produced by Tim Kring, creator of the 2000s series Heroes, the project has no announced release date. Filming is set to commence in Calgary in June.

MGM+ global boss Michael Wright praised the casting, stating: "Matt Dillon brings extraordinary depth and gravitas to this iconic role. His ability to portray complex, morally conflicted characters makes him the perfect choice to lead our reimagining of The Magnificent Seven. This series honors the legacy of the original film while exploring timeless themes about courage, redemption, and standing up against oppression—and Matt's performance will be at the heart of that story."

The original 1960 film has seen multiple adaptations, including a 1998 television series featuring Ron Perlman and a 2016 cinematic remake with Chris Pratt.
