Muharram procession in Srinagar proceeds peacefully under police guidelines

A Shia Muharram procession took place peacefully in Srinagar on June 24, 2026, following strict police advisories against provocative displays.

Hundreds of mourners, including women and children, along with Shia priests gathered at Guru Bazar around 6 a.m. The group followed the traditional six-kilometre route through the city centre and reached Dalgate by 9 a.m.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police had issued an advisory the previous day prohibiting flags, slogans, photographs of terrorists, or logos of banned organisations. The administration also barred the use of drones and warned against anti-national speeches or propaganda.

Shia cleric Masroor Abbas Ansari noted that organisers had urged participants to maintain peace and discipline. He expressed concern over the tight timeframe for the event and referenced recent arrests linked to protests in February.

Inspector General of Police V.K. Birdi stated that extensive discussions with volunteers and organisers helped ensure smooth arrangements. The procession had been banned since 1989 and was permitted again in 2023.
