Netflix has canceled its animated series Terminator Zero after a single season, as confirmed by creator Mattson Tomlin. Despite strong critical and audience reception, low viewership numbers led to the decision. Tomlin expressed satisfaction with the show's contained story while noting plans for additional seasons that will not materialize.
The Netflix anime series Terminator Zero, set in the Terminator universe, premiered on August 29, 2024, and will not return for a second season. Creator Mattson Tomlin announced the cancellation on X on February 13, 2026, stating, "It was cancelled. The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it."
Tomlin, who developed the series, served as showrunner and executive producer, explained that the production was expensive and time-consuming. He had outlined a multi-season arc, including a Future War storyline for seasons 2 and 3, and had written scripts for season 2 while outlining season 3 as part of a planned five-season run. However, he declined Netflix's offer to produce 2 or 3 additional episodes to wrap up the story, feeling the season 1 finale provided a satisfactory conclusion. "I'm also very happy with how it feels contained as is," Tomlin wrote. He praised Netflix as "good partners" for their creative support.
The series follows a soldier sent back from a future war in 2022 to 1997 to protect scientist Malcolm Lee, who is developing an AI system to counter Skynet's attack on humanity. As Malcolm grapples with the moral complexities of his creation, he is pursued by an assassin from the future, altering the fate of his three children.
The English voice cast includes André Holland, Sonoya Mizuno, Sumalee Montano, Rosario Dawson, and Timothy Olyphant. The Japanese cast features Yūya Uchida, Saori Hayami, and others. Japanese animator Masashi Kudo directed, with Production I.G. handling animation and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger as additional executive producers.
No renewal had been announced since the debut, making this confirmation unsurprising given the 18-month gap.
