Nintendo details Virtual Boy classics for Switch Online launch

Nintendo has revealed the full lineup of Virtual Boy games coming to Nintendo Switch Online on February 17, including two previously unreleased titles. The announcement features a new trailer showcasing the retro hardware's revival with modern enhancements. This move aims to preserve the cult-favorite console's library despite its original commercial failure.

Nintendo's decision to bring back the Virtual Boy, originally a 1995 hardware experiment that failed commercially, marks one of 2025's more unusual announcements. Despite initial disdain from some fans, the re-release taps into nostalgia for the red-tinted 3D system. A new trailer, released via the Nintendo Today app and YouTube, runs nearly four minutes and outlines the offerings for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

At launch on February 17, 2026, the service will include seven titles: Teleroboxer, Galactic Pinball, RED ALARM, GOLF, Virtual Boy Wario Land, 3-D TETRIS, and The Mansion of Innsmouth. Additional games arriving later include Mario Clash, Mario's Tennis, Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, Vertical Force, and V-Tetris. To enhance accessibility, the re-releases feature options beyond the original red rendering, customizable controls, and a rewind function.

Particularly exciting are two never-before-released games shelved in 1996 due to the Virtual Boy's poor sales. Zero Racers is a canceled 3D racing title in the F-Zero series, while D-Hopper—originally titled Dragon Hopper—is a top-down action-adventure game developed by the studio behind Fire Emblem. These additions highlight Nintendo's commitment to game preservation, even for unsuccessful ventures.

To experience the full effect, players need a Nintendo Switch console, a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and one of two accessories launching the same day: a Virtual Boy replica or a cheaper cardboard model. These recreate the original stereoscopic 3D visuals. Currently, there are no plans for 2D versions of the games.
