Nintendo has confirmed plans to introduce a new version of the Switch 2 featuring a replaceable battery in 2027. The move responds to upcoming European Union rules on electronic waste. The updated model will be available in Europe starting February 2027.
The European Union regulation takes effect on February 18, 2027. It requires manufacturers to design devices so users can easily swap out batteries. Nintendo updated its corporate website to state it is preparing compliant versions of its products. The company said future models will carry unique model numbers and the code OSM on packaging. Current Switch 2 units use model numbers starting with BEE. Nintendo runs repair services worldwide but the new design will allow consumers to replace batteries themselves. It remains unclear whether the updated model will reach markets outside Europe.
