Nolan McLean shines in spring outing before World Baseball Classic

New York Mets rookie Nolan McLean impressed in his only Grapefruit League appearance on Thursday, striking out six batters over four shutout innings against the Houston Astros. The performance came just before he heads to the World Baseball Classic with Team USA. McLean reached speeds of 98 mph multiple times during the outing.

In West Palm Beach, Florida, Nolan McLean took the mound for the Mets against the Astros in what would be his sole spring training start. The right-hander, who debuted in the majors last August, silenced any concerns about his readiness by allowing no runs and fanning six opponents across four innings. He threw 56 pitches and consistently hit 98 mph on the radar gun.

McLean, who joined the Mets' rotation midway through the previous season, had a strong finish to his rookie year. He secured victories in his first four starts and ended with a 5-1 record, a 2.06 ERA, and 57 strikeouts in 48 innings over eight appearances. This performance helped him retain rookie status for the upcoming season and solidified his position as the Mets' top prospect, ranked 11th overall by MLB Pipeline.

Looking ahead, McLean is set to travel to Arizona on Sunday with fellow Mets starter Clay Holmes to link up with the American squad for the World Baseball Classic. He anticipates making at least two appearances, likely in a piggyback role with another pitcher, maintaining a similar pitch count to his recent start.

Reflecting on the opportunity, McLean shared his mindset with reporters after the game: “I don’t have a ton of expectations on what I’m going to go out there and do, but I’m just super excited to go do it.” His enthusiasm underscores the significance of representing his country on an international stage.
