Oilers recall Samanski for NHL debut against Ducks

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled forward Josh Samanski from the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, setting him up for his NHL debut on Monday against the Anaheim Ducks. In a corresponding move, forward Isaac Howard was loaned to Bakersfield. Kasperi Kapanen also returns from injury for the game at Rogers Place.

The Edmonton Oilers announced the recall of 23-year-old German forward Josh Samanski from their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, ahead of their Monday matchup with the Anaheim Ducks. This move allows Samanski to make his NHL debut during the team's ongoing eight-game homestand at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.

Samanski, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound centreman, has impressed in his first North American professional season, recording seven goals and 21 assists for 28 points in 39 games with the Condors. Previously, he spent four years with the Straubing Tigers in Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga. "It's obviously awesome," Samanski said before the game. "Very excited to get things started and just experience my first game."

Head coach Kris Knoblauch praised Samanski's development, noting his strong training camp performance and reliable two-way play in the AHL. "He came to Training Camp, had an outstanding camp, made a very strong impression with everybody," Knoblauch said. Samanski's selection to join teammate Leon Draisaitl on Germany's roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina adds to the excitement. "It's amazing," Samanski remarked about linking up with Draisaitl.

In the corresponding transaction, Isaac Howard was loaned to Bakersfield after posting two goals and three assists in 28 games with Edmonton this season, plus 10 goals and 13 assists in 16 AHL contests. The Oilers also welcome back winger Kasperi Kapanen from a lower-body injury that sidelined him for three games since January 18. Kapanen, who had three goals and four assists in eight games prior to the injury, joked about his setbacks: "I gotta stop getting hurt because I have to talk to you guys every time I come back."

Andrew Mangiapane will sit out to accommodate Kapanen, with goaltender Tristan Jarry starting after his recent relief appearance. Lines are projected as Nugent-Hopkins-McDavid-Hyman, Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Kapanen, and others, subject to change.

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled forward Quinn Hutson from the AHL's Bakersfield Condors to bolster their struggling bottom six. With the NHL roster freeze beginning at midnight on December 21, several American Hockey League teams completed key trades to strengthen their lineups ahead of the season's midpoint. Notable moves include the Iowa Wild acquiring star defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks and the Bakersfield Condors adding forward Sam Poulin from the Pittsburgh Penguins. These transactions aim to boost playoff contention as the second half approaches.

The Ottawa Senators announced the recall of defensemen Carter Yakemchuk and Jorian Donovan on March 24, paving the way for both to make their NHL debuts against the Detroit Red Wings. The moves address a depleted blue line, with five defensemen sidelined by injuries. The matchup carries high stakes in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race.

The Toronto Maple Leafs demoted William Nylander to the third line amid a scoring slump during Wednesday's practice. The team also placed defenceman Dakota Mermis on injured reserve and recalled Henry Thrun, while goaltender Dennis Hildeby continues to step up in net. They face the San Jose Sharks at home on Thursday without suspended forward Bobby McMann.

The Edmonton Oilers traded forward Andrew Mangiapane and a 2027 first-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks for Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach. This move, part of efforts to adjust the roster before the playoffs, has drawn criticism for including a high draft pick to offload Mangiapane's contract. The 29-year-old signed a two-year, $7.2 million deal with Edmonton in the offseason but recorded only seven goals and 14 points in 52 games.

The Calgary Flames host the Edmonton Oilers for the second time in a week at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night. Dustin Wolf is set to make his 100th NHL appearance in net for Calgary, while Connor Ingram earns a third straight start for Edmonton. Both teams emphasize discipline after Calgary's recent 5-1 loss marred by penalties.

The Edmonton Oilers have traded goaltender Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Samuel Poulin. In a separate deal, Edmonton acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators for a 2027 third-round pick. Oilers GM Stan Bowman cited the need for a change in net as the motivation behind the blockbuster move.
