Overpass say Harry Styles cover is shaping new music

Birmingham indie band Overpass discussed how their recent cover of a Harry Styles track is influencing their approach to songwriting. The comments came during an interview at the Mad Cool festival in Madrid.

The group spoke to NME backstage at Mad Cool 2026 shortly before performing on July 11. Singer and guitarist Max Newbold said the cover helped them explore a poppier sound than usual. Bassist India Armstrong added that the process involved stripping back the track to understand its structure.

Overpass released their debut album Elsewhere, Always last month. The record explores themes of self-doubt and burnout. The band has also performed at several European festivals this summer.

Drummer Jake Bishop noted the cover's rhythm is similar to their current writing. Armstrong said they are in early stages of new material and hope to return to the studio soon.
