Palestinian flag removed from La Courneuve town hall after court order

La Courneuve's mayor Aly Diouara (LFI) has removed the Palestinian flag from the town hall facade following an administrative court order. Facing a heavy daily fine from 6am on Monday 20 April, he justified the move to spare residents the cost. The flag had been raised last Thursday to protest the Yadan law.

Aly Diouara, the new La France insoumise mayor of La Courneuve in Seine-Saint-Denis, raised the Palestinian flag on the town hall fronton last Thursday. The action protested the Yadan law, a bill by Caroline Yadan to combat new forms of antisemitism, which was withdrawn from the National Assembly's agenda.

The administrative court ordered the town hall to remove the emblem or face a "heavy daily fine" starting at 6am on 20 April. The display lasted only four days. Diouara complied to "avoid making the town hall, and thus the residents, bear the cost of this fine," as he stated on Facebook.

Despite the removal, the mayor stands firm. "Flag or not, La Courneuve and its residents will continue to support all voices calling for Palestinian self-determination, an end to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and a halt to settlement in the West Bank," he posted on social media.

Nearly 3,200 people took part in a march in Lyon on Saturday to honor Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old student who died from injuries sustained in clashes with the far left a week earlier. The demonstration proceeded calmly, but the prefecture announced it would refer the case to justice over Nazi salutes and racist and homophobic insults observed during the procession. Enhanced security measures were implemented to prevent incidents.

Daisy Duveau, the new RN mayor of Grenay in Pas-de-Calais, has removed a commemorative plaque honoring Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a Lebanese militant convicted of terrorism and released last summer. This decision, one of her first acts, aims to restore the town's dignity, according to the mayor. RN deputy Bruno Bilde praised the move.

Jordan Bardella, president of the Rassemblement National, stated that if he wins the 2027 presidential election, he would remove the European Union flag from the front steps of the Élysée Palace and Matignon, leaving only the French tricolor. He justified the move by the palace's symbolic role as the «house of the French people». The announcement comes as the RN remains known for its euroscepticism.

The Rhône prefecture has authorized the homage march for Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old nationalist militant who died on February 12 after an assault by ultraleft militants in Lyon. The gathering, scheduled for Saturday in the 7th arrondissement, will be secured by over 500 police to prevent disruptions. The victim's family calls for calm and no political expression.

In the Somme department, once dotted with communist strongholds, PCF-affiliated mayors are now few and far between amid economic decline and the rise of the Rassemblement national. In Woincourt, Mayor Arnaud Petit laments the nighttime posting of an RN poster, a sign of mounting pressure on left-wing bastions. Aging militants and a lack of successors make political survival precarious ahead of the 2026 elections.
