Sony Pictures has pulled its untitled shark thriller starring Phoebe Dynevor from theatrical release, redirecting it to Netflix for a streaming debut in 2026. The film, directed by Tommy Wirkola, features a cast including Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou. This move follows a major new deal between Sony and the streamer.
Sony Pictures announced on January 16, 2026, that it has removed its shark thriller from the theatrical release calendar, opting instead to send the project to Netflix. The untitled film, previously known as Shiver, was written and directed by Tommy Wirkola. It stars Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou, with plot details remaining under wraps.
The production is handled by HyperObject Industries' Adam McKay and Kevin Messick, alongside Wirkola. McKay expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We couldn’t be more excited to be back in business with all our friends at Netflix on this film. We had a great experience together on Don’t Look Up and look forward to working with them to make this an event streaming release in 2026.”
This development comes shortly after Sony and Netflix finalized a $7 billion-plus exclusive global pay-1 deal, building on their ongoing collaboration. Netflix holds a first-look agreement with Sony for direct-to-streaming titles. Past successes under this arrangement include Sony Pictures Animation’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines, which earned an Oscar nomination and has a sequel in development. More recently, Sony Animation’s KPop: Demon Hunters became Netflix's most-watched film ever, surpassing 325 million views.
The shift aligns with Sony's strategy to balance theatrical releases—such as its 2026 lineup including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the next Jumanji installment—with streaming opportunities. No specific release date within 2026 has been set for the shark thriller.
