Seoul shares open higher on eased Middle East tensions and chip deals

Korean stocks opened higher on Monday after the United States paused strikes on Iran. The benchmark KOSPI rose 115.65 points to 6,806.27 at the opening.

The KOSPI added 1.73 percent to reach 6,806.27 at the opening bell. The United States has held off attacks on Iran since Friday after 13 days of air strikes, raising hopes for a diplomatic solution to the near five-month war.

Oil prices fell as Brent crude futures dropped 5.7 percent to 91 dollars per barrel. West Texas Intermediate slipped 5.5 percent to 84 dollars per barrel.

Korean and U.S. tech companies agreed over the weekend to pursue cooperation projects worth a combined 950 billion dollars during an artificial intelligence summit in San Francisco. The projects include a long-term deal under which SK Group will supply 750 billion dollars worth of high-performance semiconductors to Nvidia and others.
