Seven labourers killed in Gurgaon STP wall collapse

Seven migrant labourers were killed and four injured when a wall at an under-construction sewage treatment plant in Gurgaon's Sidhrawali village collapsed, burying workers under rubble. The incident happened late Monday evening as a concrete retention wall gave way, causing a cave-in at the basement level. Rescue efforts, involving police, fire teams, and disaster response forces, continued until early Tuesday morning.

The incident took place around 7 pm on Monday at the sewage treatment plant site within the upcoming Signature Global society project in Sidhrawali village. The police control room received information about it at approximately 9:30 pm. Gurgaon civil defence Chief Warden Mohit Sharma told The Indian Express, "The rescue operations were complete last night. We roped in police, fire teams, the SDRF and the NDRF. The Manesar DCP and local SDM were present."

A group of at least 15 labourers, employed by a private contractor for the STP work, were on site when the concrete retention wall collapsed, leading to a massive cave-in at the basement level. A team from Bilaspur police station arrived promptly and coordinated with the district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for the rescue, which lasted until about 3:30 am on Tuesday. Earth-moving equipment was used to clear the rubble and extricate the trapped individuals, who were then shifted to the nearest hospital.

Of those rescued, seven were declared dead, while four sustained injuries and were admitted for treatment, a police spokesperson said. The deceased have been identified as Shiv Shankar from Banihara, Parmeshwar Mehto from Hondai, Mangal Mehto from Hathi Binda, Bhagirath Gope from Pohita in Jamshedpur, Satish from Burka Jadthal Nagar in Bharatpur, Sanjeev Gope from Pohita in Jamshedpur, and Dhananjay Mehto. The injured are Indrajeet, Chhotelal, and Shivkam Chaudhary from Nepal, and Deendayal Sharma from Bandikui. They were rushed to a hospital in Bhiwadi, where their condition is stable but under observation.

Police teams have contacted the families of the deceased and injured to inform them of the incident. Bodies have been handed over after necessary formalities. Officials stated that if families lodge complaints, an FIR would be registered and legal action taken against those responsible. A detailed investigation into all aspects of the incident is underway, police said. The Indian Express reached out to Signature Global, whose representative said their teams arrived at the spot late at night and will issue a statement soon.
