SM Prime reaches 100 MW solar power milestone

SM Prime Holdings Inc. has achieved a peak of 100 MW in solar power generation across 59 properties, including a new installation at SM North EDSA. The company claims this is among the largest capacities for a property developer in the Philippines. It highlights SM Prime's commitment to sustainability and clean energy ahead of its 2025 target.

At the close of 2025, SM Prime Holdings Inc. met its solar power target with 59 properties equipped with rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, generating a collective 100 MW. This capacity can supply energy to about 43,000 homes, comparable in size to cities like Mabalacat in Pampanga or Mandaue in Cebu. The company notes it could run 206,000 household inverter air conditioners, 486,000 30-watt LED bulbs for 12 hours, or charge 41.3 million phones.

Within SM's operations, 100 MW suffices to power 12,400 escalators or the entire SM North EDSA mall for two consecutive years. Environmentally, it prevents 97,200 metric tons of annual carbon dioxide emissions, far less than the 130,000 tons from a typical coal plant, which also produces ash waste. That coal equivalent matches emissions from vehicles stretching from Metro Manila to Tarlac in a year, requiring 5 million mature trees to offset.

"Clean energy becomes truly powerful when people feel its benefits where they live, work, and gather. What SM Prime has achieved sends a clear message: Sustainability can be accessible, visible, and part of daily life," said Energy Secretary Sharon Garin.

SM Supermalls president Steven Tan added, "Part of the SM Group’s commitment as an integrated property developer is ensuring that sustainability is ingrained across all our efforts in pursuit of a greener future." SM continues to focus on education and advocacy with partners and communities to promote environmental best practices.

"We remain committed to building malls that operate sustainably, caring for people and for the planet," Tan concluded.
