Spring advances to Uppsala rapidly after cold February

Following its arrival in southern Sweden last week, meteorological spring has now reached most of Uppsala county, with temperatures up to 10 degrees expected on Thursday according to SMHI. Spring is confirmed except along the Uppland coast, where winter lingers. Meteorologist Marcus Sjöstedt notes the unusually quick shift required seven consecutive days of above-zero average temperatures after February 15.

Uppsala experienced an unusually cold February, but the weather has shifted rapidly toward spring. According to SMHI, temperatures will rise to up to 10 degrees on Thursday, March 5, 2026. This follows spring's earlier declaration in southern regions like Skåne and Gotland on February 27.

Marcus Sjöstedt, meteorologist at SVT, defines spring's arrival as an average daily temperature above zero for seven consecutive days after February 15. "It requires us to have a daily average temperature on the plus side for seven days in a row for us to say that spring has arrived, and we must also have passed February 15," he says.

February was cold across much of Sweden, but spring has spread to large areas of Götaland and southern/eastern Svealand, now including most of Uppsala county—except the Uppland coast. Sjöstedt confirms the transition has been unusually rapid: "Has it gone unusually quickly from winter to spring? – One really has to say so."

This progression marks Sweden's shift from winter chill, though coastal areas remain wintry.
