States' space policies boost India's space industry growth

Dr. Vinod Kumar of IN-SPACe highlights Karnataka's new space policy as a positive development amid growing state-level initiatives. He emphasizes how collaboration and competition among states can strengthen India's space sector. Multiple states are actively formulating policies to attract private investment and innovation.

In a recent interview with The Hindu, Dr. Vinod Kumar, Director of the Promotion Directorate at IN-SPACe under the Department of Space, Government of India, welcomed Karnataka's newly unveiled space policy. He described it as a 'welcome step' that reflects the 'growing confidence and maturity of India’s space ecosystem.' With more private players entering the field, such state-level policies create supportive environments for talent, industry, startups, and research.

Earlier this year, IN-SPACe signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Karnataka's Department of Electronics, Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology. These agreements aim to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Space Technologies in Bengaluru and a public-private space manufacturing park focused on next-generation satellites and launch vehicles. Karnataka's legacy in technology and innovation positions it well to expand contributions to the national space efforts.

Dr. Kumar noted that several other states, including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, are formulating their own space policies. This trend is 'encouraging,' as it promotes private investment, supports startups, and enables local research. He stated, 'This multi-State momentum shows that space is now recognised as a strategic and high-value sector across the country.' A 'healthy spirit of collaboration and competition among States' will accelerate innovation and help build a strong, diversified space industry.

As the nodal agency for non-government space activities, IN-SPACe has been consulted by most state governments during policy drafting. The organization provides guidance through discussions on regulatory frameworks, industry needs, safety standards, and global best practices, ensuring policies are inclusive, industry-friendly, and aligned with India's national space vision.
