Super typhoon Fung-wong approaches the Philippines

Super typhoon Fung-wong is moving toward the Philippines with winds up to 60 m/s, prompting evacuations of one million people. Two people have died in the storm's early stages, and young Swedes on location are anxiously awaiting developments. It is the second major typhoon in the region in a short time.

Super typhoon Fung-wong, upgraded to signal 5, is hitting the Philippines on Sunday Swedish time. The storm is expected to pass over Luzon, the country's most populous island, with sustained winds of about 50 m/s and gusts over 60 m/s. The meteorological institute warns of life-threatening storm surges up to three meters and 100-200 millimeters of rain. Over one million people, mainly from coastal areas, have been evacuated, and the government has declared a state of calamity. Schools will be closed on Monday, and many flights have been canceled.

Two people have been reported dead in the typhoon's early stages, according to Reuters and ABC News. It is the second typhoon in a short time: earlier in the week, Kalmaegis killed around 200 people through landslides and flooding.

Several Swedes are in the midst of the danger on exchange programs via the Church of Sweden. River Gunnarsson, 22, in Nueva Ecija province north of Manila, is just kilometers from the storm's eye. “We are only a few kilometers from where it is predicted to pass. There will be many hours of storming,” he tells Aftonbladet. He describes the preparations: “They are putting sandbags on the roofs so they won't blow away.” Despite the warnings, River is calm: “Of course it's a bit worrying, but at the same time it feels safe.”

In southern Manila, 19-year-olds Alma Hult and Alice Weibull are waiting. They have received warnings via the UD app Resklar and Philippine authorities: “If the situation worsens, you should evacuate.” Alice says: “People are preparing extra for this typhoon because it is stronger.” Alma adds: “Everyone reacts differently of course, but most become ready for action.” So far, it has felt like a Swedish autumn storm for them, with rain and wind but no major damage.
