India's young opener Abhishek Sharma was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Delhi on February 10 due to a stomach infection. A BCCI source stated that he has been in the hospital for the past two days, with tests ongoing. It remains unclear if he will be discharged on February 11, but his participation in the match against Namibia on February 12 at Arun Jaitley Stadium appears doubtful.
Sharma attended a dinner at head coach Gautam Gambhir's residence on Sunday but left early. He also missed Tuesday's practice session. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said, "Abhi [Abhishek Sharma] has still got a few issues with his tummy, we hope that he’ll be available for the game."
If Sharma is unfit, Sanju Samson is likely to open, despite his recent struggles in the series against New Zealand. Ten Doeschate commented on support for Samson, stating, "When someone like Ishan comes in and has a series like he has, it’s pretty obvious what the selection is going to be for that first game. But we also understand that there’s probably five or six more games that you have to win and all 15 members are vitally crucial."
On a positive note, Jasprit Bumrah has recovered from viral fever and is available for selection. Washington Sundar has rejoined the team after a three-week absence. The team management remains hopeful for Sharma's availability in the match against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo.
