Taiwan extends reservist training to tackle manpower shortage

Taiwan has replaced its five- to seven-day reserve call-up with a mandatory 14-day programme that includes training on drones and the US-made HIMARS system.

Defence Minister Wellington Koo Li-hsiung told legislators late last month that the change is one of the biggest reforms of Taiwan’s reserve force in decades.

The new course requires reservists to return to units matching their original active-duty roles under the “returning personnel to their original positions” policy.

The ministry also plans to amend the law to bring retired female volunteer service members into the reserve mobilisation system.

The moves address a deepening manpower shortage as the pool of military-age recruits shrinks.
