The Clockworks unveil new single Magnificent Seven

Irish band The Clockworks have released their latest single, Magnificent Seven, ahead of their new album The Entertainment, set for release on March 27th. The track premiered on Steve Lamacq’s 6 Music show. Frontman James McGregor shared insights into the song's creation process and lyrical inspirations.

The Clockworks, an Irish rock band, have introduced their new single Magnificent Seven, which serves as a precursor to their upcoming album The Entertainment. Scheduled for release on March 27th, the album marks a fresh chapter for the group following their debut efforts.

The single made its radio debut on Steve Lamacq’s show on BBC 6 Music, highlighting the band's growing presence in the indie music scene. James McGregor, the band's frontman, provided details on the track's origins during an interview. He explained that the foundational elements of Magnificent Seven emerged prior to the album's development. "The musical bones of Magnificent Seven came well before the album was started," McGregor stated.

To break away from previous patterns, the band experimented with production techniques. "To free ourselves from the patterns of the first album, we wrote loads of demos on Logic using only a midi keyboard, a Juno and a mic with loads of auto tune. Somehow the music for this song made it through that process and into the album," McGregor recounted.

Lyrically, the song draws on metaphors from the American frontier to address contemporary issues. McGregor described his long-held concept: "Lyrically, I’d had this idea for ages of using the ‘Wild West’ as a metaphor for writing a song about technocracy in the modern West, using the criminals that control so much of our daily lives as cowboys."

The title and theme were inspired by a real-world reference. McGregor noted overhearing an economist describe major tech companies as the ‘Magnificent Seven,’ sparking a connection to the classic Western film of the same name. "It was one of those ‘eureka’ moments, the comparison between these companies, and the characters in the film ‘The Magnificent Seven’. Not only the fact that it’s a Western and that they’re cowboys, but that the film is about the cowboys coming to save this village," he added.

This release underscores The Clockworks' innovative approach to blending cultural references with social commentary in their music.
