Ture, 100, is Sweden's oldest spelman: not giving up

Ture Sehlberg from Valvträsk outside Boden recently celebrated his 100th birthday and continues to actively play the harmonica.

Ture Sehlberg, 100, from Valvträsk outside Boden still plays the harmonica and is considered one of Sweden's oldest active spelmän. About 30 people celebrated his birthday at the Björken assisted living facility in Boden, including his brother Sixten Sehlberg, aged 93. He hopes to turn 101. “I shall skin the state for lots of money still, I have promised myself”, says Ture Sehlberg. Until a few years ago he travelled to folk music gatherings in northern Sweden with his car and caravan and played late into the night. Riksspelmannen Daniel Nyström from Kalix, who has played accordion together with him, believes Ture is likely Sweden's oldest active spelman. “I do not know anyone who has participated actively at such an advanced age”, says Nyström.
