Venom to release sixteenth album Into Oblivion in May

British black metal pioneers Venom have announced their sixteenth studio album, Into Oblivion, set for release on May 1 via Noise/BMG. The album features the band's longstanding lineup and marks their first new material since 2018. A video for the lead single, "Lay Down Your Soul," is now streaming.

Venom, formed in Newcastle in 1979, are credited with originating the black metal genre and influencing its global popularity. Their upcoming album, Into Oblivion, comprises 13 tracks that blend the band's classic 1980s sound with modern progressive elements, maintaining their signature heavy and evil style.

The project faced delays due to the Covid pandemic, recording issues, and a commitment to perfection. Bassist and vocalist Cronos, a founding member, commented, “This album has really pushed the boundaries, but if you want to make a killer album, you pay for it in blood, sweat and tears.” Guitarist Rage added, “I’m so proud of this album, it’s astounding! It feels so different, yet so familiar. The sonics are a step up, no song sounds the same, but they all work together.”

The lead single, “Lay Down Your Soul,” echoes the band's early days, particularly their song “Black Metal,” with a catchy, sing-along chorus. Cronos noted, “I think it’s healthy to recognise things from back in the day and bring them into a new setting that gives it a whole fresh approach. The fans are going to go mental for it!” Drummer Dante highlighted the lineup's 17-year tenure: “It’s gone like that, seventeen years! It’s all down to friendship and mutual respect.”

Into Oblivion tracklist includes “Into Oblivion,” “Lay Down Your Soul,” “Nevermore,” “Man & Beast,” “Death The Leveller,” “As Above So Below,” “Kicked Outta Hell,” “Legend,” “Live Loud,” “Metal Bloody Metal,” “Dogs Of War,” “Deathwitch,” and “Unholy Mother.” Pre-orders are available in formats such as double gatefold smoke vinyl, limited edition splatter vinyl, CD digisleeve, and digital, with signed photo cards from the Noise Records store while supplies last.
