Victor Wembanyama signs $252 million Spurs extension

The San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama have agreed to a five-year, $252 million contract extension. Wembanyama opted for the 25 percent maximum scale rather than a potential 30 percent supermax worth up to $303 million.

The deal is a maximum rookie-scale extension that includes a player option in the fifth season. Wembanyama will earn $16.9 million in the final year of his rookie contract before the new agreement begins in the 2027-28 season, when he is set to make $43.5 million.

By choosing the lower percentage, Wembanyama is forgoing roughly $9 million in the first year of the extension and about $10 million annually if he had qualified for the supermax. The move is intended to give the Spurs added financial flexibility for future extensions involving Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

The arrangement follows the example set by Jalen Brunson, who accepted a reduced deal with the New York Knicks in 2024 to help the team maintain roster-building options under salary-cap rules.
