West Orange high school chess team claims first New Jersey state title

The West Orange High School chess team has won the New Jersey K-12 state scholastic championship, marking their first such victory. They defeated strong competitors including Princeton Prep and Livingston. The team now prepares for the national high school championships in Chicago later this month.

The West Orange High School chess team, known as the Mountaineers, achieved a historic milestone by securing the New Jersey K-12 state scholastic championship. This victory represents the school's first state title in chess, coming as a significant upset against established rivals like Princeton Prep and Livingston.

Team captain David Milstein highlighted the effort behind the win, stating, "It was a serious upset. It really spoke to all of the hard work that my team put in and just the level of dedication that we have and the love of the game that we all have."

With this success, the Mountaineers are advancing to the national high school championships in Chicago, a first for the school. Sophomore Delmari Ferguson expressed enthusiasm, saying, "It's a beautiful opportunity. I love going to big tournaments. And I know a lot of us also love going to big tournaments, especially with the seniors getting this win, it really is a beautiful opportunity for us to go to Chicago."

Senior Zander Venutolo added, "To go to nationals, it's exciting, because we've never gone before. And it's going to be a new experience for all of us."

To fund the trip, covering flights, hotels, tournament fees, and meals, the team initiated a fundraiser that has raised more than $5,000. Chess club advisor Ara Berberian praised the support, noting, "This community responded with phenomenal support. So I have to say, first and foremost, thank you to everyone who has made going possible."

For the players, particularly the seniors, the nationals offer a chance to create lasting memories, represent their school, and motivate future chess enthusiasts.
