Woman dies in car-train collision in Varberg

A woman has died following a collision between a car and a train at a railway crossing in Varberg municipality. The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon, and the woman was taken to hospital but could not be saved. Train traffic was temporarily halted between Varberg and Borås.

The accident occurred just before 4 p.m. on Thursday at a railway crossing in Tofta, north of Lindberg, in Varberg municipality. According to police, a car collided with a train heading to Borås. The driver, a woman, was taken to hospital by ambulance, but later that evening police reported she had died from her injuries. Her family has been notified.

Emergency services, ambulance, and police were called to the scene. The car ended up in a ditch after the collision, and rescuers were able to extract the woman from the vehicle. The train, carrying around 50 passengers, was stopped, and the passengers were evacuated to a replacement bus. Train traffic on the route between Varberg and Borås was halted during the rescue operation.

Police spokesperson Adam Isaksson Samara told TT: "The car has ended up in the ditch. Emergency services and ambulance were first on the scene and were able to extract a person from the car."

The incident is being investigated as carelessness in traffic, but no one is suspected. There is no information on the cause of the collision, and police are working to investigate the circumstances at the crossing.
