Yankees option prospect Spencer Jones to Triple-A

The New York Yankees optioned outfield prospect Spencer Jones to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, reassigning him to Minor League camp. This decision follows the team's offseason re-signings of Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger, which reduced competition for outfield spots. Jones, the club's No. 6 prospect, expressed loyalty to the organization despite the move.

TAMPA, Fla. – Spencer Jones, a 24-year-old outfielder and the Yankees' No. 6 prospect, arrived at spring training aware of his likely path back to the minors. The Yankees' moves to re-sign Trent Grisham and acquire Cody Bellinger had already signaled limited opportunities for a major league outfield role. On Monday, before the team's 5-3 Grapefruit League loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees optioned Jones to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Jones has shown promise this spring, posting six hits in 18 at-bats for a .333 average, including one double, three home runs, seven RBIs, and three stolen bases. He mentioned incorporating elements of Shohei Ohtani's swing to enhance his consistency. Despite the optioning, Jones will continue participating in spring games, including Tuesday's matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, Fla.

Manager Aaron Boone offered encouragement to Jones, advising, “Don’t focus on things that might be out of your control.” Boone added, “The reality is, he’s coming off a really strong season. I feel like he continues to make really solid adjustments. He came in here and has represented really well. You see the signs of him continuing to get better.”

Jones himself remains committed, stating earlier in camp, “In my mind, this is the best organization to play for. If opportunities come later, I think it’s for a good reason, and that’s because we’re trying to help the team win a World Series.” General manager Brian Cashman noted that other teams might have already promoted Jones to the majors, but the prospect prefers to stay with New York.

In a related move, the Yankees also optioned right-hander Elmer Rodríguez, their No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline, to Triple-A. Rodríguez appeared in six Grapefruit League innings, allowing two runs on five hits for a 3.00 ERA, with one walk and five strikeouts. He is currently representing Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, where he started against Cuba on Monday evening. Boone praised Rodríguez, saying, “He’s got a real chance to impact our club this year. And that’s credit to him and the year he had last year, and what he’s done over the winter and this spring. He’s somebody that’s very close to impacting our club.”
