Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya denied Sandro Tonali with a key save midway through the first half, while Newcastle's Yoane Wissa missed a chance in the second half by blasting over the bar. Viktor Gyokeres also wasted a counter-attack opportunity against Bukayo Saka, who was returning from injury as a substitute since the EFL Cup final on March 22. Eze hobbled off shortly after halftime, with the injury's severity unclear, adding to Arsenal's challenges amid a season of managing multiple issues. Arteta praised his players' defensive discipline and courage but stressed the need for better play with the ball. “There were moments in the first half, moments in the second half... where we had so much discipline and courage and great habits defensively,” Arteta said. “But with the ball there are moments that we have to do much better if we want to be much more dominant in the game. We can improve in many areas.” Arsenal changed one player from their previous lineup, bringing in Ben White for Cristhian Mosquera. Newcastle made five alterations, with Bruno Guimaraes starting for the first time since February. The win extends Newcastle's poor run, dimming their faint European qualification hopes as they sit 14th. Arsenal next face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday, followed by Fulham in the league on Saturday. Arteta remains confident: “We have had to manage a lot of situations this season... but the good thing is the team continues to compete.”
