Beijing official welcomes enthusiastic Taiwanese at Cross-Strait forum

Wang Huning addressed the Straits Forum, noting enthusiastic Taiwanese participation despite restrictions and urging delegates to stand on the right side of history.

Wang Huning said on Saturday that this year’s Straits Forum was held in a grand manner, with many Taiwan compatriots overcoming obstacles to participate enthusiastically.

He added that expanding Cross-Strait exchanges and interactions and enhancing the well-being of compatriots is the will of the people and a general trend.

The independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party this year imposed the first outright ban on local officials attending the event in Fujian Province, after already prohibiting senior officials.

The forum, running since 2009, will feature 58 events across Fujian this year.

Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun met Xi Jinping in Beijing on the fourth day of her six-day mainland visit, marking the first meeting between the two parties' leaders in nine years. In a press conference, she described the talks as the KMT's initial step to defuse cross-strait tensions, calling it a "choice of war or peace." Analysts say the encounter reaffirms the 1992 consensus but hinges on the KMT regaining power in Taiwan.

Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun experienced a drone-delivered milk tea at Meituan's Shanghai headquarters, calling it a valuable lesson for Taiwan. She paid homage at Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing and urged stronger cross-strait cooperation and peace. The visit covers Jiangsu, Shanghai and Beijing through Sunday.

Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) chair Cheng Li-wun will arrive in Shanghai on April 7 for a six-day trip to mainland China, traveling by train to Nanjing to pay respects at Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum. A KMT press statement issued on Tuesday night described Sun Yat-sen as the founder of the Republic of China—Taiwan's formal name—and a symbol of the shared past between Taiwan and the mainland. Cheng stated that the party has an inescapable historical mission to promote peaceful cross-strait dialogue.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Thursday that Beijing’s opposition to official US exchanges with Taiwan remains firm. The statement follows concerns over a possible call between US President Donald Trump and Taiwan’s Lai Ching-te after Trump’s recent summit with Xi Jinping in Beijing.
