Conjoined Limpopo twins separated successfully after surgery

Conjoined twin boys born in January at Mankweng Hospital outside Polokwane have been successfully separated by surgeons. Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba praised the team led by Pediatric Surgeon Dr Nyaweleni Tshifularo for the complex procedure. The twins are in stable condition and recovering in the neonatal ICU.

The conjoined twin boys were delivered by a 29-year-old mother transferred from Maphutha Malatjie Hospital outside Phalaborwa to Mankweng Hospital. The separation surgery, which lasted more than eight hours, was performed by a multidisciplinary team including pediatricians, surgeons, plastic surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses, led by Dr Nyaweleni Tshifularo. He noted that after stabilizing the babies and conducting investigations on their joining, the team ensured a coordinated effort for the high-risk operation, with nursing support throughout. Dr Tshifularo commended the team's participation in the delicate procedure. Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba described the operation as a historic moment for the province, stating: “This operation represents a historic moment for Limpopo. For the first time in South Africa, a rural hospital has accomplished such a high scale operation. This achievement changes the landscape of healthcare in our province and reaffirm our belief in the potential of rural hospitals. It is a clear call for us all to invest resources in our rural facilities.” Ramathuba highlighted the skill and commitment of the province's medical professionals, noting the growing capacity at rural facilities.
