Cyberpunk 2077 marks fifth anniversary with developer messages

Cyberpunk 2077 is celebrating its fifth anniversary on December 10, 2025, five years after its launch on December 10, 2020. Developers from CD Projekt Red shared heartfelt messages thanking the community for their support amid the game's challenging journey. The RPG has since recovered from a rocky debut to achieve significant sales and updates.

Anniversary Celebration

Cyberpunk 2077 launched on December 10, 2020, but faced immediate backlash due to technical issues, leading to its removal from the PlayStation Store and widespread refunds. CD Projekt Red committed to improvements, delivering the major 2.0 update in 2023 alongside the Phantom Liberty expansion, which overhauled gameplay systems.

Developer Reflections

To mark the milestone, quest designer Pawel Sasko expressed deep gratitude: "I feel nothing but gratitude towards each one of you. I feel so thankful to be part of this community. I love all the pictures, videos; all the cosplay and mods that you have done for Cyberpunk 2077."

He continued, "I hope you have enjoyed the stories we have told about the characters we have built. I feel so blessed to be part of this community. I feel so thankful to be able to work on this game and to add something valuable to your lives."

Level designer Bartek Pyrko also shared his experience: "I'm deeply proud to have been part of the team that shaped Night City. The project changed me--as a designer and as a person--and being my first project at CDPR, it became a defining and unforgettable chapter of my career."

Milestones and Future

The game has sold over 35 million copies, surpassing the pace of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It expanded to the Switch 2 platform earlier in 2025. A sequel, Project Orion (also known as Cyberpunk 2), is in development. Recently, CD Projekt Red announced an official Cyberpunk Trading Card Game in collaboration with WeirdCo, featuring characters from Cyberpunk 2077 and the Edgerunners anime series. The physical TCG draws from the franchise's universe, including comics, with a Kickstarter planned for 2026. Cards will highlight icons like V, Johnny Silverhand, and Lucy, adapting elements like gigs and crew-building into gameplay.
