The Arizona Diamondbacks overcame a five-run deficit to defeat the San Diego Padres 12-7 in the Mexico City Series finale at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú. Tim Tawa's first career grand slam in the seventh inning sparked the comeback. The victory capped the series on Sunday.
Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Diamondbacks loaded the bases with one out on singles by José Fernández, Nolan Arenado and Alek Thomas. Tawa then crushed a 97.2 mph sinker from Padres reliever David Morgan into left field for a grand slam. The 100.1 mph drive traveled 363 feet, cutting the lead to one run. Ildemaro Vargas doubled next, Corbin Carroll walked, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled in two runs to give Arizona the lead. Arizona had relied on home runs earlier in the game. Fernández hit a solo shot off Michael King's 82.3 mph sweeper in the fifth, his third homer of the season at 103.1 mph and 409 feet. Vargas followed in the sixth with his sixth homer, a 91.4 mph sinker to right field, extending his MLB-leading 20-game hitting streak this season to 23 games dating back to last year. In the eighth, the Diamondbacks loaded the bases again with Fernández, Arenado and Thomas. Vargas cleared them with a triple to right, and Ketel Marte singled home Vargas from third.
