Earth911 lists top eco-friendly toy brands for holidays

With growing concerns over toy safety and sustainability, Earth911 has updated its guide to environmentally responsible toy brands suitable for holiday gifting. The article highlights companies using recycled materials, sustainable wood, and nontoxic processes to create durable, safe products. A 2024 survey shows 45% of parents under 40 prioritize sustainability in toy purchases.

Toy safety issues, including toxic elements like barium, lead, chromium, and antimony exceeding legal limits by up to 15 times in plastic toys, underscore the need for vigilant shopping. Earth911's updated article, originally published in 2017 and revised in November 2025, recommends brands that emphasize sustainable materials and safe manufacturing.

PlanToys, based in Thailand, uses depleted rubberwood, preservative-free wood, non-formaldehyde glues, water-based dyes, and recyclable packaging. The company sources 75% of materials within 30 km of its Trang factory, has planted 34,000 trees since 2004, and aims for carbon neutrality this year. Its PlanWood material comes from excess sawdust for zero-waste production. Products meet ASTM and EN71 standards and include the Dancing Alligator and Victorian Dollhouse.

Green Toys produces items from 100% recycled plastic, mainly milk cartons, diverting the equivalent of 54 million jugs from landfills. Made in the USA without BPA, phthalates, or PVC, their toys feature minimal packaging with recycled cardboard and soy inks. Popular items are seaplanes, dump trucks, and tea sets.

Lovevery, a Certified B Corp, offers Montessori-inspired kits with FSC-certified wood, organic cotton, and water-based paints. It targets 90% renewable or recycled materials by 2025 and net-zero emissions by 2030, offsetting shipment carbon. Play Kits cater to stages from newborn to preschool.

Hape, founded in Germany with 40 subsidiaries, uses sustainable bamboo and wood from managed forests, including 413 acres purchased in China. ISO-certified, it produces puzzles, instruments, and dollhouses with nontoxic paints.

Other brands include Tegu's magnetic blocks from Honduras, HABA's 70-year-old German wooden toys from sustainable forests, Tender Leaf Toys' reclaimed rubberwood items from Indonesia, Begin Again's creative sets, Wishbone's 3-in-1 wooden bikes, and Eco-Kids' safe art supplies launched in 2008. DIY options are also suggested for zero-waste play.

A 2007 study found 50% of 1,200 toys contained PVC with phthalates, while a 2025 UC Davis study detected harmful chemicals in preschoolers. Shoppers should seek BPA-free, phthalate-free, PVC-free items with certifications like FSC or ASTM. The industry shifts, with 90% of leaders prioritizing sustainability per a 2024 report; Mattel targets 100% recycled plastics by 2030, and Lego uses recycled paper packaging.
