Education ministry proposes standardised school uniforms across basic education

The Ministry of Education has proposed introducing standardised uniforms for all learners in Competency Based Education institutions to address high costs and promote equity.

The proposal stems from resolutions at the National Conference on Education held from May 7 to 9. Stakeholders recommended a common uniform design across basic education levels, including Comprehensive and Senior Schools.

Schools would maintain distinct identities through customised badges. The conference also called for regulating and capping uniform costs to ease the burden on parents and guardians.

Education specialist Boaz Waruku questioned the approach. He said the focus should instead target pricing, materials, and exclusive distribution arrangements between schools and suppliers.

Members of Parliament have separately proposed regulations to end compulsory uniform purchases from specific vendors, allowing parents to buy from approved alternatives.

Sponsored by Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge, it aims to uphold children's right to free basic education. If passed, it would ease financial pressures on parents.
