Elegoo launches Centauri Carbon 2 with multicolor printing

Elegoo has announced the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo, its first 3D printer with an integrated color system, set for release on January 26. The model builds on the popular budget printer with features like automatic filament switching and improved temperature control. Pricing details remain unconfirmed, but it follows the affordable $300 predecessor.

Elegoo, known for producing some of the best budget 3D printers, is introducing the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo, which includes a built-in filament changer supporting up to four colors or materials per print. This system offers easy color switching, instant loading, automatic filament backup, and RFID auto-recognition to identify filament types and suggest optimal settings.

James Bricknell, CNET's managing editor and 3D printing expert, noted, "Even if the Centauri 2 is just the first Centauri with a color system attached, it'll likely be worth the price of admission." He added that he has the printer in his workshop and expects to complete testing soon.

The new model features a high-temperature, 350-degree Celsius hardened steel nozzle for better heat and wear resistance, an upgrade from the previous 320 degrees Celsius. It supports high-performance filaments and includes a redesigned grille with a smarter temperature controller that automatically adjusts chamber airflow via opening and closing shutters, depending on the print material. For example, with PLA filament, it opens at a lower temperature automatically, unlike the manual process on the prior version.

Additional enhancements include four precise sensors and a zone-leveling mode that speeds up calibration by 13.9%, reducing prep time. The printer operates at a quieter 45 decibels and has a user-friendly 5-inch capacitive touchscreen supporting 11 languages.

The Centauri Carbon 2 will go on sale starting January 26, though Elegoo has not yet disclosed the price. The original Centauri Carbon launched at $300, positioning it as a top budget option.
