Federal government declares May 1 public holiday for Workers' Day

Nigeria's Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark International Workers' Day. Interior Minister Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced it in a statement signed by Permanent Secretary Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The Federal Government announced the public holiday on Tuesday, April 29, 2026.

In the statement, Dr Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion.

He commended their hard work and dedication to national development, noting that their efforts are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity.

The minister encouraged workers to embrace patriotism, productivity, and dedication to their duties, qualities crucial for sustainable development.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting workers' welfare and security, and creating a favourable environment for economic growth.
