George Russell puzzled by speed deficit at Silverstone

Mercedes driver George Russell qualified fourth for the British Grand Prix after struggling with straight-line speed during qualifying at Silverstone.

Russell starts the race behind pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli and the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

The Briton also qualified fifth for the sprint race and finished fourth behind winner Antonelli. Data showed Russell at 299.8km/h in the speed trap, 17th fastest, compared to Antonelli at 302.6km/h and Hamilton at 317.9km/h.

“All weekend we've been losing lots of time in the straights,” Russell said. “The team are working super hard to understand why that is.”

Antonelli leads the championship with 179 points to Russell’s 136 after wins including the sprint at Silverstone. Martin Brundle noted Russell may be struggling to adapt to the new-generation cars.
