INMET releases first detailed bulletin on 2026 El Niño

The National Institute of Meteorology released on Monday, 29, the first bulletin with detailed projections for the 2026 El Niño. The document, prepared with official agencies, warns of significant Pacific warming and climate impacts in Brazil.

The bulletin indicates that sea surface temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean already exceed 2°C near the South American coast. Between July and September, rainfall is expected to be above average in the South region and below average in the Center-North, with a high possibility of extreme heat waves and forest fires.

The phenomenon has over 90% probability of persisting until early 2027 and may become very strong. The document results from a partnership between INMET, INPE, ANA, CEMADEN, SGB and SEDEC, with new editions planned monthly to guide preventive actions at state and federal levels.
