The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has advised drivers to use the Dongo Kundu bridge to reduce congestion at the Likoni ferry crossing. This follows traffic jams caused by limited ferry services. Over 300,000 people and 6,000 vehicles use the crossing daily.
The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), which manages ferry services, has urged drivers to opt for the Dongo Kundu bridge rather than the Likoni ferry crossing. The recommendation aims to alleviate frequent traffic congestion in the area.
Through an official statement, KPA has encouraged motorists traveling from Mombasa Island to the other side of Likoni to use the Dongo Kundu road. The bridge, constructed at a cost of Sh40 billion to link Mombasa and Kwale counties, has largely been overlooked by drivers who continue to rely on the ferry, leading to backups.
Congestion worsens when fewer ferries are operational. For instance, yesterday only three out of five ferries were in service. KPA's Communications Manager, Mr. Sylvan Mghanga, stated that many Kenyans are unaware of the Dongo Kundu bridge, prompting them to crowd the Likoni crossing and cause repeated jams. "Wakenya wengi hawajui kuhusu daraja la Dongo Kundu na hivyo basi kung’ang’ania kuvuka katika kivukio cha Likoni hali inayosababisha msongamano mara kwa mara," Mghanga said.
He called on drivers to utilize the bridge, which has simplified travel between Kwale and Mombasa. Figures indicate that more than 300,000 people and 6,000 vehicles cross at Likoni each day, suggesting the bridge could help ease the pressure.
