Labour Party congresses conclude ahead of Umuahia convention

Senator Nenadi Usman, Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, announced the successful conclusion of the party's nationwide congresses from ward to state levels. The exercises, which began on Thursday, were peaceful, and attention now turns to the national convention in Umuahia on April 28.

Senator Nenadi Usman made the announcement in a post on her X handle on Saturday, congratulating elected leaders and commending members for their commitment to peaceful processes.

“As our party wraps up its congresses today, from ward to state levels, I extend warm congratulations to all elected leaders. I also commend members nationwide for their commitment to peaceful and rancour-free exercises. With congresses concluded, attention shifts to Umuahia for our convention. I urge party members and stakeholders to maintain unity, discipline, and teamwork as we gather on April 28.”

Usman urged stakeholders to carry the same spirit to Umuahia, where a new national leadership will be elected.

The Labour Party has faced leadership disputes since the 2023 elections. Stakeholders dissolved the Abure-led National Working Committee in Umuahia and appointed a 29-member caretaker committee under Usman to organise congresses and the convention.

A Supreme Court judgment on April 4, 2025, ruled that Barrister Julius Abure’s tenure had ended before his March 27, 2024, convention in Nnewi. A Federal High Court panel, led by Justice Peter Lifu, dismissed Abure’s claim, affirming Usman’s interim leadership and directing INEC to recognise it. Abure has vowed to appeal to the Supreme Court.
