Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described his closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday as productive, with talks focused on Nigeria’s future. The meeting, held at Jonathan’s residence in Abuja, involved a delegation of South-East leaders and forms part of Obi’s consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, led a delegation of prominent South-East leaders to a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday at his residence in Abuja.

Obi described the engagement as productive, stating it focused on Nigeria’s future amid ongoing challenges. He was accompanied by Igbo elders, senators of the African Democratic Congress from the South-East, and other political associates.

In a post on X following the meeting, Obi wrote: “Our discussions were frank, thoughtful, and anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.”

He stressed the need for leaders to collaborate across regions to address economic hardship, rising insecurity, and social divisions. Obi advocated for leadership guided by competence, character, capacity, and compassion, and a shift from consumption to production using Nigeria’s resources.

Obi framed the 2027 general elections as a defining moment to reset the country’s trajectory, prioritizing quality education, a conducive business environment, and security for citizens.
