President Lee Jae Myung is wrapping up his state visit to Egypt and departing for South Africa to attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg. He is expected to discuss global issues including inclusive growth and climate change. This year's summit marks the first time the event is held in Africa.
In Cairo, President Lee Jae Myung held summit talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to discuss enhanced cooperation in peace efforts and the defense industry. He delivered an address outlining his initiative for deeper engagement in the Middle East and unveiled a comprehensive initiative for cooperation in the region, aiming to promote regional peace, deepen economic partnerships, and expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
President Lee is scheduled to depart for South Africa on Friday (Nov. 21, 2025) to attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg, running from Saturday to Sunday under the theme 'Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.' National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said Lee will present South Korea's economic and climate policies and pledge a more active international role. With this year's summit being the first in Africa, Lee will underscore Seoul's commitment to expanding cooperation with the continent, demonstrating solidarity and contributing to its development, Wi added.
On the sidelines, Lee plans to meet leaders from MIKTA—a group of five middle powers including South Korea, Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, and Australia—to discuss strengthening multilateral cooperation on global issues. He is also set to hold back-to-back talks with leaders of France and Germany on bilateral ties. Wi told reporters on Thursday: "President Lee will strengthen Korea's status as a responsible global member and lead efforts to create an environment needed to restore the multilateral trade system."
Following the three-day visit to South Africa, Lee will fly to Turkey on Monday, concluding his Middle East and Africa tour that included the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
