Lightning kills one fisherman and injures another off Lamu coast

One fisherman died and another was seriously injured when lightning struck them while fishing at sea in Ingini, Lamu, on Saturday. Kassim Badi Usama, 48, died instantly while Mohamed Wako suffered severe injuries. Officials have urged fishermen to exercise caution during the rainy season.

On Saturday, during heavy rain, two fishermen were struck by lightning while fishing from their boat in Ingini, Lamu. Kassim Badi Usama, aged 48, died at the scene, while his companion Mohamed Wako sustained severe injuries. The boat was damaged by the strike, according to police reports.

Lamu County Police Commander Shadrack Ruto confirmed the incident, stating, "The fishermen's boat was damaged by being torn apart by lightning." He advised fishermen to reduce their activities at sea this rainy season to avoid risks.

Manager of the Lamu Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), Iftakkar Majid, urged fishermen, seafarers, and residents to be cautious. "I also advise citizens not to seek shelter under trees during rain as this puts them at risk of being struck by lightning," Majid said. He recommended consulting the weather department before any sea activities.

The deceased's family has appealed for government assistance. His cousin, Badi Nassir, said, "My cousin was the family's sole breadwinner. His wife and two children have been left destitute. The government should consider compensating the family so they can at least support themselves." The man leaves behind a widow and two children.

Former chairman of the Beach Management Unit (BMU) in Faza area, Mohamed Ali, called on the government to ensure disaster funds reach fishermen affected by such incidents.
