Liza Minnelli's memoir 'Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!' offers candid insights into her tumultuous romantic history, particularly a remarkable overlap in 1973. At that time, shortly after meeting English actor and comedian Peter Sellers in London, Minnelli announced their engagement. However, she was still married to her first husband, Australian entertainer Peter Allen, and also engaged to her childhood friend Desi Arnaz Jr., son of the famous TV stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
Minnelli, who charmingly calls herself 'the original nepo baby' in the book due to her own famous parents—Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli—held a press conference to end one engagement and begin another with Sellers, whom she had just met. 'What on earth was I thinking, holding a press conference to announce the end of one engagement and the beginning of another? With a man I had just met and barely knew?' she writes. She adds, 'Things can get pretty wild at Casa Minnelli...well, that’s life in showbiz.'
The engagement to Sellers proved short-lived, lasting only about a month before the pair broke up. The memoir also touches on other aspects of Minnelli's life, including her friendship with Princess Diana, a negative experience working with Gene Hackman, and an affair with Martin Scorsese, described as having 'more layers than lasagna.'
Now a four-time divorcée approaching 80, Minnelli remains optimistic about romance. She shares her ideal dating preferences: 'Ideally, I’d like to date an older elegant man who dresses beautifully and is filthy rich. Then I’d like to date a 40-year-old guy who is passionate about something. I don’t care what. Then I’d like to date an 18-year-old, who I see twice a week and whose name I don’t know.' The book highlights the wild, unfiltered side of old Hollywood glamour through Minnelli's eyes.
