Magnitude 7.1 earthquake hits Venezuela and is felt in Manaus

Residents in Manaus reported feeling tremors on Wednesday night after an earthquake in Venezuela. The magnitude 7.1 quake struck in the north of the country.

Residents in various areas of Manaus reported feeling tremors at the beginning of Wednesday night, June 24. Videos show windows, doors and furniture shaking for a few seconds.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake had its epicenter near the city of Morón in northern Venezuela and was strongly felt in Caracas. Images show damaged buildings, smoke clouds and residents panicking in the streets.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the tremor occurred at a depth of 21 kilometers. The quake was also felt in regions of Colombia, and a tsunami alert was issued for coastal areas up to 300 kilometers from the epicenter, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, before being canceled.

So far, there is no information on injuries or material damage in Manaus. Venezuelan authorities have not yet released an official casualty count.
