Mexico monitors potential cyclones Amanda and Boris as hurricane season begins

The 2026 cyclone season began on June 1 with two systems under watch in the Pacific. One could become Amanda and the other Boris.

A low-pressure area southwest of Baja California raised its chance of cyclone development to 50 percent in 48 hours and 90 percent in seven days. It sits 2,280 kilometers from Cabo San Lucas and moves west-northwest.

Another low-pressure zone is forecast south of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas with a 30 percent chance of development in seven days. Authorities are monitoring it due to its proximity to the coast.

The National Meteorological Service warned that strong rains are expected Monday in Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas. The precipitation could include hail and lightning.
